Have the dates for 2015 been released? I can't find anything about it on the main website.

Pffle! Like I know such things!

No really, I dont think so! Post is inspired by this...

Not my image, and not to bash or point at EITHER artist - but there might be stricter rules on both Height of Displays and this particular kind of "back facing" display for next year. Im all for using your space well, and Ive noticed MOST artists are really, really good about making sure their display is stable, but...

How can anyone even SEE the prints that are up there? (not to mention that the ones at the top are smaller)

I feel like the spaciousness of A-kon tables doesn't really let you mistake the table behind you for your art so I don't want the staff to worry about that? When the tables are spaced far enough like a-kon, having back facing prints actually helps attendees find artists without the possibility of mistaking someone's art for another. I feel like that picture was a real.. strange situation.. no one at a-kon puts their prints like 10 feet away from their table because we have that rule that we can only go so far back + the spacing means yea.. basically i don't think anyone is making that mistake XD.

If you do instate a height rule, i hope it's no something super restrictive like otakon or ax, which have 5' and 4.5' rules respectively. I think artists can build very sturdy displays up to 6 7 even 8 feet high, especially if they use photo stands.

That's my two cents regarding that photo anyway XD

Naw, it wont be that short unless its a Hotel/Higher up call. I think its actually not supposed to be over 10, but the rule got lost in the forum shuffle.

As long as its STABLE and not over like, 15 feet? (Which is like, what, 10-12 feet off the table, which is kinda nuts no matter how you slice it) it wouldnt be a concern.

The whole back facing is a huge drama right now in certain parts of the interwebs. I do think how the islands are it isnt a high concern - other than I could see how it could annoy the pants off someone who always gets asked about the art that far behind them. Although that is a chance for you to engage them in your own work!

If A-Kon institues a more restrictive height rule - it is likely going to be because the Fire Marshall is requiring that A-Kon follow city regulations. City regs say displays over 8 feet require engineering drawings be submitted to the Fire Marshall no less than 90 days before the event.

I can't imagine people mistaking art that far back.. let's see.. islands were 2 or 3 tables wide, that's 12 to 18 feet apart! And if you're only allowed to go 4 (was it 4?) feet back, worse case scenario they would still be 4 feet apart, but realistically people usually have prints on their own table, or very close so there's at least 10-16 feet of seperation XD. The only time i've had that happen to me was at a small west coast con, where the tables were about 4-6 feet apart in the back. Yes you could just reach behind you and say hi XD

8 Feet off the table is plenty, i don't think anyone went that tall this year.. And yea, having rules to encourage stability are a plus instead of just height. Some rules say if your display falls down once (or twice) you aren't allowed to put it back up again (or sometimes not till the next day). I don't know if that's appropriate but brainstorming ideas!

On a side note: the Renaissance Hotel (across the highway) can be booked now for $116 (AAA members) or $126 regular per night

Just saw that a few days ago. I'm undecided if I want to book there, or if I want to wait till the Anatole and/or the Garden Inn become available.

You can book now without putting a down payment and cancel later - though I wouldn't wait too long to cancel or you may forget and get charged for a room you don't want.

If it matters the 127 rate is forever, like that's just their normal cheap ass rate it seems. The 116 is nice since i'm aaa, but because their front entrance was under construction the walk this year was needlessly long and i'm not sure i want to book it till i know the construction is over.

I was worried about that as well since I have 2 very small kids who were making that walk with me but construction is supposed to be finished this month, so I'm not worried about it for next year..
